I started hunting when I was around 8 years old and a couple feet high. At least that's when I got my first Daisy pellet gun from my father. It took me a few weeks before I was able to kill my first sparrow. A few months later I talked him into buying me a scope for my pellet gun and then I became even more deadly with that thing or so I thought. I was raised in a farming community and the farmers would pay me for each bird that I killed that were eating their cherry trees. So as you can imagine a young kid getting paid to kill birds with his brand new pellet gun was a double bonus. I was in hog heaven and from that day on I was hooked on bird hunting with my Daisy pellet gun.
After that my father took me on his big game hunting trips for mule deer and elk and it was solidified. I was 100% addicted to hunting. Nothing else in my world back then even came close. I must've read a couple hundred hunting magazines and books, anything I could get my hands on. All the money that I got from the farmers was spent on hunting gear or hunting magazines. I had a stack of magazines in my room that was 4 feet high.
It wasn't until I was 14 years old that I was able to complete the Hunters Safety Course. I went hunting that October about a month before my 15th birthday. I ended up killing a decent 4-point (8-point in eastern terms) mule deer buck and had my first experience with buck fever. From that day on my hunting career started.
It wasn't until I was 18 years old that I started elk hunting...that's another story for another time.
Be safe and good hunting my friends.
